Premature baby is born in every minute. In a year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm, and this number is rising. They come to our world to early, very often not being able to breath, eat and weighing less than one kilo. Preemies start their life journey in incubators with tubes connected to a life support system.
In Lithuania about 1500 premature babies are born every year. Not all of them survive. Preemies are in great need of qualified health support (doctors, nurses) and advanced medical equipment.
Premature babies fight for their lives while being connected to a life support system which observes their heart work, blood pressure, breathing and saturation of oxygen in the blood. At that time preemies can easily fit into the palm of an adult and they're so weak that even their skin is transparent. Premature born babies are yet to learn how to maintain their vital functions such as breathing, sucking and swallowing. Preemies have very weak immune system which can't protect them from various infections. Moreover congenital heart defect and retinopathy are very common health issues for premature babies.
Kaunas center of retinophaty is providing medical support for preemies. However this center is in need to buy necessary modern non-invasive, less painful medical equipment to ensure highest efficiency and life quality for premature babies.
