Let's renovate Vilnius Children's Day Care Centre (Sep, 2009-Sep, 2010)

Here every child is awaited. Here every child spends his/her time greatly. Your donations were used for renovating the day care center and adapting the environment for children.

SOS Children’s Village is the organization that pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and abandoned children. At the moment 76 children are living in Vilnius SOS Children’s Village, in 12 family homes. Also, 18 young people are living in SOS Youth Facilities. In SOS Children’s Village every child has a foster mother, s/he is raised with brothers and sisters, which helps her/him build strong emotional bonds for the rest of the life. The children are provided with a home and suitable environment, where they take an active part in community life.

Another direction of the activities of SOS association is to prevent children from becoming “social” orphans by strengthening their families. Our goal is to improve the conditions for a child to grow in the real, biological family. By providing combined help for the families we aim at greater personal responsibility of the parents and lower risk that the children would be taken from the family and transferred to foster institutions. The first family strengthening project started in Alytus in 2005. At the moment more 240 children are included in Vilnius family strengthening project. In order to extend the range of direct services to children, in April a children's day care center was opened.

About the project: The project “Reinforcement of the material base of Vilnius children‘s day care centre“ is a part of a children day care center project in action.

The goal of the children day care center is to make sure that the children receive complete education and have the right to grow up in a safe and equipped environment by:
• developing personal and social skills of the children coming from risk families and improving their adaptation in the society;
• teaching the adults how to ensure the well-being of a child in the biological family;
• providing the necessary material support and ensuring a minimum, non-discriminatory child's standard of living.

The main problem was that the premises of the day care center were in need of cosmetic repair and adaptation of the environment for children. Once the material items were acquired, more comfortable places for children to do homework, to eat were created. The environment is now better adapted for the children: wall maps, educational games, etc. were acquired. The environment of the day center has become more attractive for the children, the staff can improve the organization of children's activities by using all the spaces of the premises.
