Let’s help rebuild the life

“If I could, I would just hide in the shadows. I would like to disconnect with all my current acquaintances so that I can create a new version of myself. Change my name, way of speaking, movements. I would like to learn something I had never even thought about and fully dedicate myself to that activity. If I could do anything, I would die and be reborn as a new person. ”

59.2 percent people imprisoned in Lithuania would like to start a new life. The "Written Hands" Initiative is an opportunity for a convicted person to make a sincere connection with new people and acquire the skills needed to successfully engage in life in freedom. This initiative is an opportunity for people to change.

Activities in prisons: We visit two institutions live: Kaunas Remand Center and Panevėžys Correctional Facility. We also communicate remotely with the convicts in the Šiauliai interrogation isolator. During regular sessions, we help young convicts to develop social skills, creativity, deepen their knowledge of budget and career planning and other topics. We aim to make our volunteers as new friends of the convicts during the activities, showing by example that there is always another way.

Mail Communication: During the quarantine, we had to find new ways to keep in touch with convicted people, so we created a secure system for mail communication. This form of volunteering exists in Kaunas and Panevėžys.

Public education in the public space: We organize various campaigns, which include followers, we share facts and conversations with people who see the punishment system up close, and from 2021 onwards in the autumn part of our texts are written by a former convict. In this way, we seek to break down stereotypes in society and promote understanding of convicts.

We believe that the painful stories of the righteous people are only part of the picture, only the beginning. Together, we can add new colors to that picture.
