Donate food instead of throwing away (Sep, 2009-Jan, 2010)

Thanks to your donations “Food bank” purchased a refrigerator-freezer, needed for storage of perishable food. It will increase the amount of food raised by up to 10%.

Since 2001 the “Food bank“ implements food collection campaigns annually. The total amount of support by food collected and distributed in 2008 amounted to 2.2 million Lt. In 2009 not only the traditional autumn “Food bank“ campaign took place – this year Easter food collection started successfully, during which with the help of almost 4,000 volunteers in 23 towns food of total value of 570 thousand Lt has been collected.

About the project: According to World bank data, the number of people who must survive with only 350 Lt a month will grow from 428 thousand to 636 thousand. Lonely elderly people, single mothers or fathers, large families mostly live in poverty. Economic crisis affects people with small income the most, which is why it is important to find ways how to help them survive during the crisis. The project is aimed at people facing the biggest risk of poverty: lonely people of pension age with small income, the disabled, the unemployed, large families, also families with a single farther or mother, and people with social risk (the homeless, ex-convicts).

Food, which due to damaged package or short consumption period was not sold, but is still suitable for consumption, will be collected from supermarkets. Such products will not be utilized, but will reach the table of the poor. A big part of the products that supermarkets offer are perishable diary, meat products, fresh fruits and vegetables. Now “Food bank” will be able to store it appropriately. This way the support reaching poor people will become full-fledged, ensuring satisfaction of most necessary nutrition demands.

Swedbank matched 2,812 Litas of yours and the project successfully raised all the necessary sum!
