Doctors Clowns: a Laugh Virus for Ill Children

Doctors clowns – specially taught actors, who visit ill children in hospitals or other establishments, where socially vulnerable children can be found. During clowns visits, fairy-tale heroes revive, soap-bubble rain suprisingly comes out, children and their parents sing along with clowns newly improvised songs, but sometimes the only needed thing is to sit quietly next to the tired baby or hold his hand while waiting for unpleasant procedure.

Doctors clowns visit little patients at their wards in hospitals, communicate with them, give individual attention taking into consideration every child's needs, imagination, health condition, personality and other circumstances. This theatrical contact is called clown therapy, which effectiveness is acknowledged by scientists and pediatricians.

Clowns let children feel themselves as children, not only patients. Clowns communicate with the healthy part of a child not drawing attention to ilness, looking at child's routine not like doctors or worried parents, but joyfully with humour, at the same time staying sensitive and delicate.

Since the beginning of social clowns initiative, doctors clowns have visited more than 45,000 ill children. During the project social clowns will be visiting ill children, children with disabilities and children in foster homes in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and other Lithuania towns. It is planned that doctors clowns during 2016 will visit 20 000 children across Lithuania.
