Christmas Soup for the Elderly (Dec, 2009)

Every day the volunteers of Order of Malta deliver hot food for 300 elderly people in 13 towns in Lithuania: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys, Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis, Rokiškis, Akmenė, Ignalina, Kaišiadorys, Venta, Šiauliai and Naujoji Akmenė. Thanks to your donations 1000 plates of hot soup were delivered to the seniors.

...88 year-old Nina Kazurova opens the door of her tiny flat in a five-floor soviet building. The woman, who‘s been a meteorologist for all her life, is completely alone. No children, nor relatives. Nina‘s mother died in the earthquake in Ashgabat, 32 years ago her husband died. The only faithful visitor is the one from the Order of Malta, who brings Nina soup. Hot soup is not only food, but also the window to the world.

Christmas soup campaign was launched in 2006. Its aim is to say out loud that next door many poor elderly people are living alone. That they are in need of care and attention. That we want and can help them. This initiative is aimed at collecting funds from which projects for the elderly care will take place all year round.

The fourth Christmas soup festivity was held on 5-6 December, 2009 all over Lithuania, in 13 cities and towns. It was organized by the loyal volunteers of the Order of Malta with the help of Lithuanian Armed Forces, municipalities and local businesses. During the festivity 20 thousand Litas of donations was raised. On 11 December the events organized by the Order of Malta were finalized by a charity concert “We need you“, during which the amount of donations (via sms and aukok.lt) was announced to reach half a million Litas.

Let the annual Christmas soup smell with compassion and joy to help!
