In Lithuania, thousands of families live in constant tension and social exclusion. They have no other choice. When a family has a person with severe complex disabilities, the entire burden of life falls on the shoulders of one or two relatives.
The numbers are telling and “uncomfortable”:
• 95% of caregivers of people with disabilities are mothers.
• They carry a caregiving load of 10–14 hours per day.
• 60% of these women are forced to leave the labor market.
This means not only financial hardship and psychological exhaustion, but also lost dignity — both for the person being cared for and for the caregiver. People with disabilities remain completely dependent on the help of aging parents, while the parents have no opportunity to work, rest, or take care of their own health.
The charity and support fund “Nepatogūs” (“Uncomfortable”) is changing this reality. Our mission— to create dignified and empowering living conditions for people with severe complex disabilities and to provide respite and the opportunity to live their own lives for the families who care for them.
We are creating a social innovation — a unique Shared Living Homes model, which is more humane and more effective than traditional care institutions. It is an environment where, despite the severity of the disability, a person can live safely, with dignity, and as independently as possible, while their family members can return to a full life, knowing that their children or relatives are safe and cared for.
What we have already achieved:
• We established the first homes: Four young adults with severe disabilities received the opportunity to live a dignified, adult life.
• We brought families back to life: Members of four families can return to the labor market, studies, or simply regain their strength.
• We created jobs: We employed specialists who provide quality support.
Our goal: The second Shared Living Home in 2026.
Contribute to this important project. Help “Nepatogūs” become full members of society, and help their families find relief.
